What happens when you take two newbies to Yosemite for the first time?
Technically, one of them (ahem…April) went to Yosemite on bus with a group of Chinese tourists for a day. I say that doesn’t count. The other one (ahem…Ning) would rather be dancing in a club. The baby, of course, is a Yosemite vet.
We took our girls trip to Nature the second week of January. It was so warm, it felt like early spring. We hiked the Mist Trail (because, where else does one take those who have never been to Yosemite?) and April almost died. She complained the whole time and did some funky, old Chinese grandma shuffle down the mountain to save her knees. My cousin, Ning, and I occupied ourselves trying to sneak video evidence of said shuffle, but our giggles gave us away every time.
Naturally, since April was so thrilled about hiking the Mist Trail, we hiked Yosemite Falls (a longer, steeper trail) on our second day. She almost collapsed at Columbia Rock, but somehow we managed to shame her into making the trek to Oh My Gosh Rock and the bottom of the Upper Falls. This is all part of my not-so-secret plan to turn them into adventurous nature lovers who will come hiking and adventuring with me again.
I needed a nature fix and this was a great way to start off the new year. One can’t go wrong with trees, waterfalls, fresh air and good, goofy company. I think it’s probably time to go again soon…anyone up for a hike?
